President Donald Trump said Sunday that he may have to resort to using the United States’ nuclear arsenal to combat the threat of ISIS.
Trump told reporters in Manila that Duterte, who took office last year, may have “a plan for a nuclear strike against ISIS.”
Trump has repeatedly expressed support for the Philippine military in the wake of the July 11 bombing of a Malaysian airliner, which killed 329 people.
Trump has said that he hopes Duterte will “be a strong leader” and not use the Philippines’ nuclear weapons arsenal to take out the Islamic State, which has been blamed for the worst mass-casualty bombing in modern U.S. history.
In addition to using nuclear weapons to protect itself from an attack by ISIS, the United State has also used the arsenal against al Qaeda-linked groups in Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere.
